Minister orders probe into sodomy of students

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has asked the Ghana Education Service (GES) to get to the bottom of the alleged sodomy of some students of the Adisadel College in Cape Coast by a Mathematics teacher of the school.

Commenting on the issue in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, Education Minister, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, said the ministry was deeply concerned about the allegation and indicated that if it became necessary, the matter should be reported to the police, since it bordered on criminality.

The Deputy Director-General of the GES, Mr Stephen Adu, in a separate interview, denied media reports that the Mathematics teacher cited in the alleged sodomy case had been dismissed by the school authorities.

Mr Adu said it was only the Director-General of the GES who could dismiss a teacher for any misconduct.

According to him, the teacher in question had rather been requested to stay away from the school and report himself to the Central Regional Education Directorate, while investigations into the allegation continued.

He said currently the case was before counsellors of the school who were talking to the alleged victims to elicit more information from them to find out the truth.

He said after the counsellors had finished their engagement with the students, the matter would then be referred to a disciplinary committee at the district level, after which it would be, if warranted, sent to a regional disciplinary committee and subsequently a national disciplinary committee for hearing.

He said the disciplinary committee would then submit recommendations to the Director-General of the GES based on which appropriate sanctions might be applied against the teacher.
