PRESS RELEASE BY HIS EMINENCE THE NATIONAL CHIEF IMAM OF GAHNA, SHEIKH DR. OSMANU NUHU SHARUBUTU

24.02.2011 LISTEN
By Muhammed Suraj Jawando

I pray in the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful.

In the past 6 weeks, I have followed with close attention and keen interest the media development on various political and social issues in the country, particularly the ones relating to my image and activities published on the ghanaweb.com.

I would therefore like to declare that I am neither a politician nor a public figure sponsored by any political party in Ghana or elsewhere. I am a religious leader whose primary role is the promotion of Islam, the development and welfare of Muslims and Ghanaians at large.

I have been propagating Islam and the development and welfare of the Muslim community in Ghana for the past 50 years and I intend to continue my efforts in this direction for the rest of my life. My present preoccupation is to ensure the completion of the Kanda National Mosque which is under construction, so as to cater for the spiritual development of the Muslim Community.

My other objective which has been my preoccupation for the best part of my life is to create structures that will provide opportunities for Muslim youth to get the best in terms of education and professional heights in Ghana. Hence, I established the Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu Education Trust Fund (SONSETFUND), the main objectives of which are to

• Raise the level of educational standard in deprived, marginalized and the Zongo communities in Ghana and also

• Provide assistance to the less privileged for credible courses of study or viable businesses within the limit of resources available to the Trust fund.

I always consider myself to be above party politics and would like to remain same. What I would like to see is that political parties in Ghana help me on this crusade to raise the level of education within the Muslim communities. The Holy Prophet Mohammed's tradition states that “Islamic scholars are the true heirs of noble Prophets and Messengers of God until they engage in politics or become materialistic”.

I want to use this medium to appeal to the political parties to ensure sanity by being circumspect in the information that they feed the good people of this country and also to disassociate my name and image from the Ghanaian party politics.

Furthermore, I would like to use this opportunity to invite each and everyone to join me in the commemoration of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H) at new Fadama School Park from 9pm on 26th Feb. to 5am 27th Feb. 2011.

In conclusion, I wish all the parties success in their forthcoming party primaries and I continue to pray and cherish the hope that mother Ghana will continue to develop in peace and unity. On the other hand, I also would like to take this opportunity to pray for peace and development for our neighboring African countries particularly Ivory Coast where two contending political parties are fighting each other at the expense of the masses.

Thank you.
