Government to sponsor best mathematics and science students to university

Gomoa Nyanyano, (C/R), Sept. 26, GNA - Mrs Georgina Quayeson, Head of Science Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service, said government would from this academic year sponsor students to the university who excelled in mathematics and science in the Senior High School Examination.

    
She therefore entreated parents to encourage their children to develop the interest in the learning of the two subjects along side others to enable them to benefit from the sponsorship.

    
Mrs Quayeson made the call at the inauguration of an 89,000.00 Ghana cedis block to be used as Secretariat of Nana Wiabo Educational Trust Fund at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Central Region.

    
Mrs Quayeson called on parents and stakeholders in education to continue to support the government in its efforts at promoting education in the country.

    
She said: "It is the best legacy that we could leave to our children who are the future leaders to enable them to contribute effectively towards the socio-economic development of the country".

    
Nana Dr Obeng Wiabo II, Chief of Gomoa Nyanyano and Oshiehene of Gomoa Akyempem Traditional Area, who establish the fund, said his vision was to ensure that  all children, especially the less privileged, had access to education.

    
The aim and objective of the fund that is non-tribal and non-political, is to reduce illiteracy in the area by 75 percent by 2020.

    
He said the fund had targeted 100,000.00 Ghana cedis as its seed fund and would start distribution to beneficiaries including orphans and children of single parents as soon as enough money was generated.

    
Nana Wiabo expressed the hope that with the inauguration of the Trust Fund, the desired environment would be created to enable people in and around the community to realize their full potentials to contribute towards the development of the country.

    
He appealed to corporate bodies and philanthropists  to support the fund to achieve its aims and objectives.

    
An amount of 200,000.00 Ghana cedis was raised in an appeal for fund to support the Fund.

    
Nana Dr Ketu Cudjoe, New Patriotic Party aspiring parliamentary candidate for Gomoa East, presented five computers and its accessories valued at 12,000.00 Ghana cedis to help equip the secretariat.
