San Francisco, August 27, (THEWILL) – Police in Port Harcourt, Rivers State today said the body of slain former Niger Delta militant leader, Mr. Soboma George has been recovered by security operatives.
Soboma George was murdered in what police said was a gunfight between rival gangs on Tuesday night around Nembe Street in Port Harcourt, just as George made his way from a soccer pitch. Three persons have been declared wanted for his murder.
"The police have recovered the body of Soboma George. We are going to conduct an autopsy on his body after which it will be released to his family," Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Suleiman Abbah said.
A photograph of his body with multiple gunshot wounds to the head was made available to journalists by a police spokesperson.
Soboma George was leader of a militant group called the Outlaws, and also a member of the umbrella Niger Delta militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
George accepted the central government’s amnesty and surrendered with hundreds of fighters loyal to him.
Police said security has been beefed up in the capital city and its environs.
