Brong Ahafo Regional Directorate of Education bans Our Day
July 24, 2010 Nkoranza (B/A) July 24, GNA - The Brong Ahafo Regional Directorate of Education, has directed all basic school heads to terminate the organisation of the end of term merry making popularly called "our day".
The directorate claimed that during such celebrations some academic staff extorts money from the pupils.
The directive followed an emergency meeting of all districts and municipal directors of Education from the region held in Sunyani and chaired by Reverend Samuel Afranie Amankwaa, Regional Director of Education.
Madam Phillipa Banson, Nkoranza South District Director of Education announced this at a meeting with 72 primary school head teachers in the district.
She said a number of parents had expressed worry about the demand of money made on their children by some members of the teaching staff for our day.
Madam Banson advised head masters of basic schools not to allow students to organise get-together after writing their final examinations, since they wine and dine at odd hours.
"Studies have revealed that during such programmes students take in excessive alcohol, engage in sexual promiscuity, which resulted in unwanted pregnancies", she added.
Mrs Banson called on parents to monitor the movement of their children to prevent negative peer influence.
She entreated religious leaders to use the pulpit to educate the youth about the need to eschew the pleasures of society, which could drag them into social vices and rather concentrate on their books to grow to become useful adults.
Meanwhile, the regional directorate of education has also suspended the organisation of excursions and football matches in basic schools outside the region.
