West Africa Foundation demands prosecution for Gambia killers

The Media Foundation for West Africa is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the killers of 44 Ghanaians and other African nationals in The Gambia in 2005.

The foundation's demands are contained in a petition sent to government on Thursday, a day after Foreign Ministry officials met families of the victims.

A copy of the petition was delivered to the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister. speaks for the foundation.

“We respect the conclusion of the international investigations that were done,” spokesperson of the foundation Janet Quacoupome told Joy News' Moses Kanga, adding “we respect the work that they have done but as to whether we agree in totality with all their conclusions is another matter.”

“We have said time and over again that the we would still like those who were identified to brought to book. “…they should be made to bare the consequences of their actions.”

She said the foundation will raise the concerns until the needed justice is delivered.

The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Chris Kpodo, has assured the foundation of government's commitment to ensure justice in the matter.

“We are so committed to human rights we will together with civil society work towards maintaining human rights, respect for human rights and rule of law within the sub region.

"We will study your petition and if need be we will want to sit down with you and see how we will move forward,” she said.
