The mystery over the existence of billions of dollars belonging to Ghana, purportedly, stashed in a Swiss bank keeps boggling interested minds with various revelations day in and out.
The amount which is in seven different accounts with one in excess of 400 billion dollars since the 80s, is codenamed the “Oman Ghana Fund”, and attempts by successive governments to retrieve the money have failed to yield any results.
Whilst most people have discounted the existence of such an amount, the man touted as the sole trustee to the fund, Mr Blay Miezah, insisted in a TV interview broadcast in the USA in the late 80s that the money is real.
“The Oman Ghana Fund is real” he told an interviewer, which was rebroadcast by Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV on Thursday March 12, 2010.
Mr Miezah discounted any foul play on how he acquired such wealth, “I say I have not defrauded anybody.”
In the said interview, Mr Miezah also refuted the assertion that the contentious money was deposited by Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which he was made the sole trustee.
When he was probed further about the source of the money, he apprised: “Our former president has no involvement in the fund…the money come from the ancestors.”
Interestingly, Mr Miezah was not forthcoming on where the money actually came from, since the admission that the money came from the ancestors leaves much to be desired, and maintained, “where they (the ancestors) got the money from, I cannot disclose it”.
Meanwhile, Mr Gregg Frazier, the man who has been leading the advocacy for Ghana to retrieve the money abandoned by various governments, asked Ghanaians not to lose faith in the fund and reiterated that the money is real, “it belongs to the state (Ghana)” and not Blay Miezah.
Mr Frazier has been following the account for the past 20 years, he told host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom–Okyere that he “wants co-operation from government to get the money”.
He however said he would want less than one percent of the fund to establish a hospital as prescribed by the fund and to also pay investors that were contracted to sign the contract.
Nevertheless the NDC government, just like its predecessor, has so far shown little interest in the fund.
