Accra, Feb. 25, GNA - Philip Yaw Manegbe, a driver, who bolted with his colleague's taxi was on Thursday sentenced to seven years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.
Manegbe, charged with stealing, pleaded guilty and the court presided over Mrs. Adwoa Coleman convicted him accordingly.
The court ordered that the car be given to the owner, Mr. Seth Owusu Acheampong.
Prosecution said the accused lived at Nungua and Ashaiman and on January 12, this year, at about 17 hours accused hired the complainant's car to Nungua and bolted with it.
The court heard that a report was made to the Police and information was sent police stations about the case.
On February 3, this year, the convict and one Kwadwo Stephen were spotted by the complainant at Ashiaman and caused their arrest.
Prosecution said the car was intercepted and convict and the accomplice now deceased were arrested.
The court heard that when the suspects were brought to the Ashiaman Police Station, convict admitted that he stole the car and changed its colour from ash to yellow and white.
Prosecution said the accomplice fell ill in Police custody and died while he was being sent to the hospital.
