Shock and amazement gripped residents of Frafraha near Adenta in Accra, when a German national allegedly shot himself in his room with a revolver.
The man, whose name was given as Eric Helter, 75, committed the act around 11:30 pm on Thursday February 5, 2010 but died the following morning at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital whilst receiving medical attention.
He was said to have been married to a Ghanaian woman for some years now and living in a hired apartment at Adenta Frafraha.
The couple, according to information gathered by this paper, lived in separate rooms at the time of the incident.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, the Adenta District Commander DSP, Stephen Ahiatafu, stated that 75-year-old Eric Helter lived with the wife at Frafraha for some years.
According to the commander, information gathered indicate that on that fateful day, Eric Helter returned home from town late and drunk.
“Formerly, Helter was said to have been taking only beer but we were told he later drank alcoholic paper wine in addition to the beer and always looked drunk whenever he returned from town.”
He said, according to the wife, Mrs Helter, on that fateful day whilst asleep, she heard a gunshot from the husband's room and rushed out with her maid servant to find out what was amiss.
He said the wife, who could not enter the room for fear of being shot also, rushed to a nearby police snap check point to seek the assistance of the police personnel on duty.
“When the police got there and finally broke the door of Mr Eric Helter, he was in a pool of blood and on the brink of dying.”
DSP Ahiatafu indicated that the police therefore rushed him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention but he gave up the ghost the next morning on the hospital bed.
He said the gun he used in the alleged suicide had since been retrieved and the case was under investigation to ascertain the truth.
The commander added that he would not suspect foul play until full investigations were carried out.
