The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says the establishment of natural resources and conservation departments will help create awareness about the deplorable environment and the need to preserve natural resources.

The Sector Minister, Ford Kamel, made the point at the opening of a sensitization workshop on Natural Resources conservation at Busua in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

He said although natural resources contribute significantly to the country's Gross Domestic product it has led to the shortage of lands.  In a speech read on his behalf, the Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo, observed that some sectors such as agriculture are particularly vulnerable to the reckless use of resources in terms of land degradation and desertification.

He emphasized that conservation and management of natural resources are of strategic importance to national development and must be given the needed recognition and attention.

The Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Local Government Secretariat, John Coffie Angama said the establishment of Natural Resource Conservation Department at the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly levels will merge government agencies at the local units into one administration.
