Daboase (W/R), Dec 21, GNA - The Mpohor Wassa East District Assembly has improved its revenue collection by almost hundred percent in 10 months.
From January to October the assembly collected GHC 1,269,929.80 out of a budgeted amount of GHC2, 268,812.02 as against GHC1, 089,442 collected in the same period last year.
Mr Anthony Bassaw, the District Chief Executive of Mpohor Wassa East, said this at the fourth Ordinary meeting of the third session at Daboase.
He expressed optimism that the assembly would exceed its target for the year when the rest of the revenue for November and December come in and attributed the achievement to effective team work urging the staff and assembly members to continue with the zeal to make more successes.
Mr Bassaw said the assembly would explore other sources of revenue generation.
He said the few markets were the major income earner that is meagre and communities would be sensitized on the need to pay levies and fees to generate revenue for development.
On projects the Chief Executive said the assembly has completed boreholes and wells at selected communities, offices for the assembly among others while a new market is at an advanced stage.
He said the District Tender Committee would soon open tenders for the construction of sanitary facilities, wells and the re-gravelling of roads.
Mr Bassaw said a team from the Cadbury Cocoa Project has provided 1,000 bicycles for distribution to pupils and teachers who trek about two to four kilometers daily to school.
Mr Kwabena Ennin Boahene, Presiding Member of the Assembly, urged the 40-member house to work harder in order to benefit from grants by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assessment Programme to undertake development programmes.
Alhaji Yakubu Adam, Mpohor Wassa District Director of Education, briefed the house on the proposed Grants and Reporting Accountability Improve Literacy (GRAIL) being funded by the USAID and implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.
He said the GRAIL is aimed at improving the learning of children from kindergarten to primary three and appealed to the assembly members to contribute to the success of the programme by educating the communities on the programme.
