Christian Dahm, the Managing Director of African Cashew Alliance, an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has stated that the cashew industry holds tremendous economic potential for Ghana.
He said, “Increasing local processing can create thousands of jobs and a stable market for farmers' produce.”
Mr. Dahm was speaking at the celebration of the Ghana Cashew Day in Sunyani, which was attended by cashew farmers, traders and processors.
He explained that Africa is the biggest producer of cashew, adding that it was crucial for farmers, buyers, processors and researchers to join hands to develop the industry.
Apart from the health benefits, he added, cashew production provides a sound economic venture that would play a significant role in developing countries.
Mr. Dahm urged Ghanaians to show interest in the cultivation of cashew as “it is a well recognized economic product on the international market.”
Mr. Emmanuel Dwumoh from the Cocoa Research Institute, Mr. Rowell Kuti of Technoserve, Mr Yayra Amedzro from West African Market Link and Mr. Seth Osei Akoto from the Cashew Development Project took the participants through topics including cashew marketing, farming, research and development in Ghana.
