Farmers` Day Celebration Committee lauds northern chiefs

By Edmond Gyebi, Tamale - Ghanaian Chronicle

The Chairman of the National Farmers Day Celebration Organising Committee, Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, has commended the chiefs and people of the Northern Region for showing a high sense of hospitality and affection to the thousands of people who trooped to Tamale for the December 4th Farmers Day celebration.

He also expressed appreciation to the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the Tamale Metropolitan Security Committee (METSEC), men and women of the Ghana Armed Force, the Northern Regional Police Command, Ghana National Fire Service, Bureau of National Investigation, the Red Cross, Zoomlion, and the media for the excellent roles they played in ensuring a successful and peaceful celebration.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Chronicle in Tamale, Mr. Mabengba, also the Deputy Northern Regional Minister said the peaceful hosting of the event had erased the dire impression many Ghanaians had about Tamale.

According to him, the Farmers Day celebration, to a large extent, promoted most business in the Northern Region, through the one weeklong exhibition at the Jubilee Park, and the Centre for National Culture.

Other business organisations from Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Ho, Sunyani, Techiman and other parts of the country, also took advantage of the celebration to display their products and artifacts, and enjoyed high purchasing.

Local food vendors, hoteliers, transport owners, smock weavers, hawkers and other petty traders also enjoyed maximum profits from the event. Commending the entire members of the Organising Committee for ensuring an effective planning of the event, Mr. Mabengba said the Farmers Day Celebration also compelled the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly and the Regional Coordinating Council to expand the streetlighting for maximum security, sanitised the city, and increased the flow of water within the metropolis.

He said the committee, with the support of the Northern Regional and the Agric ministers, as well as other stakeholders, was able to publicise the event to whip up the euphoria of the people across Ghana.

The Committee Chairman therefore appealed to the chiefs, opinion leaders and the youth of Tamale, to sustain the peace for more of such events to be held in the area.

Meanwhile, for the first time in many years, the leaders of all the feuding families, gates and factions from the ethnic groupings in the north, especially Dagbon, were seen sitting together, interacting and sharing ideas, and even dined together, through the ingenuity of the Committee.

It was therefore not surprising when President John Evans Atta Mills himself commended the Committee endlessly for the perfect organisation of the event, which promoted, not only business, but peace and national unity.
