THE CAPE Coast Traditional Council over the weekend organised a colourful ceremony at the Eminitmadze palace in Cape Coast to honour Cardinal Peter Kojo Appiah Turkson on his appointment as the President of the Pontifical Council of Peace and Justice at the Vatican.

He was given the stool name 'Okunyin Kojo Nyamesomfo Kwankyerefo' and also presented with a citation on his enormous contribution to the Catholic Church and his achievements.

He was then made to sit on a stool three times and to hold the staff of the Cape Coast traditional area to seal the honour bestowed on him.

Conferring the honour on him, the Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, urged him on achieve greater heights and prayed for God's protection and guidance for him his new office at the Papacy.

Osabarima Kwesi Atta also presented to Cardinal Turkson, a chasuble, a long white dress worn by Catholic priests for mass service.

The Central Regional Minister, madam Ama Benyiwa-Doe, who was among the many dignitaries who graced the occasion, said Cardinal Turkson's appointment will leave an unforgettable mark on Cape Coast and commended the traditional council for seeing it necessary to honour him.

Madam Benyiwa-Doe also commended the Catholic Church and Cardinal Turkson for not turning their back on the traditional council as some churches do due to their belief that traditional values and customs were devilish.

She appealed to him not to forget to use his new office to woo investors to the area to invest in education so as to revive the falling standard of education in the region.

According to her, Cardinal Turkson's appointment to head the Council of Peace and Justice in Rome shows that the world had recognized that Ghana was a peaceful country.

The Archbishop of Accra Diocese, Charles Palmer Buckle, who chaired the function, said Cardinal Turkson's new appointment was challenging, adding that he got the calling due to his selfless dedication to the service of God.

He called on Ghanaians to do what is right in the sight of God for unity and peace to prevail in the country so as to substantiate Cardinal Turkson's calling to head the Peace and Justice Council at the Papacy.

The Anglican Bishop of Cape Coast Diocese, Daniel Sylvanus Allotey, said the Cardinal's appointment indicates that God's favour was on Ghana and assured him of their support through prayers to fortify him in his new capacity as the President of Peace and Justice in Rome.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Turkson is expected to leave the country for Rome by the end of January next year.
