The government will by the end of this year commence work on six-lane road projects from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Ofankor and from Tetteh Quarshie Circle to Adenta, all in Accra. Work will also begin on an interchange at the Tetteh Quarshie Circle within the fourth quarter of this year. All other trunk roads in the country will be converted into dual carriage roads to reduce accidents to about 50 percent. Dr Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Transport, disclosed these in an interview after the new Japanese Ambassador, Mrs Kazuko Asai, paid a courtesy call on him to strengthen relations between the two countries. Dr Anane said the construction of the roads would reduce the time people spend when moving from one place to another. The dual carriage roads, he said, would make vehicles move faster and also attract investors. “We must reposition ourselves to make sure investors come to work in our country. This calls for the reconstruction of better roads to prevent frequent accidents,” he said. For her part, Mrs Asai said Japan was ready to provide support for the construction of bridges and roads in the country. She expressed worry about media reports that the people of Kasoa did not favour the construction of the road from Accra to Cape Coast but Dr Anane assured her that everything was set for the project. Mr Martin Mensa, Director of Feeder Roads, said that between 1996 and 1999, the Japanese government supported the construction of 21 bridges in the country at the cost of $4 million, and also funded seven medium span bridges in cocoa growing areas at the cost of $10 million. “Currently, Japan is supporting the government to construct 18 bridges in seven regions at the cost of $8.5 million. This programme is under the Feeder Roads Bridge Development project,” he said. Mr Mensa said the Ministry was holding talks with the Japanese government for the construction of 40 more bridges in the northern part of the country, which has several rivers and tributaries.
