Stop Hero-WorshippingPastors – Presiding Bishop

  Tue, 13 Oct 2009

The Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Kwaku Asante, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, has scorned on what he described as “hero-worshipping” of pastors and church leaders by some Christians.

He said such a practice was fuelling factionalism, division and unhealthy competition in churches, a development that could potentially derail the church's focus.

The Rt. Rev. Asante was speaking at a farewell service held in his honour by the Kumasi Diocese of the church at Wesley Cathedral, Adum.

Until his election as head of the Methodist Church in Ghana early this year, Rev. Asante was the Diocesan Bishop of Kumasi. He took over from the Most Rev. Robert Aboagye Mensah as Presiding Bishop of the church.

Rev. Asante, during the farewell service in Kumasi, reminded pastors, church leaders and Christians in general that their talents and abilities should be channeled into the growth and wellbeing of the church.

He urged them to eschew arrogance, self-seeking glory and submit themselves to Christian values and tenets of the Bible for the spiritual and physical growth of Christendom.

He likened the church to the human body, and said just as the body needed all the parts to function effectively, so should Christians be supportive of each other.

He expressed gratitude to the leadership of the church in the diocese and praised them for being understanding and cooperative during his tenure as Bishop of Kumasi. He was hopeful that similar support would be extended to his successor.
