Cattles invade North Kaneshie, Tesano roads

Cattle, goats, and stray dogs are fast taking over the roads of North Kaneshie and Tesano, both suburbs of Accra, due to negligence by their owners. But the problems from the cattle seem to be predominant and worrisome.

The situation is causing traffic on the busy roads, since the cattle go grazing without anybody accompanying them. The cattle also pose a serious danger to motorists.

Some motorists have been asking why these animals should be allowed to parade through the streets of Accra without anybody guiding them.

A motorist, Kofi Agyepong, in an interview with Accra File queried why the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the police look unconcerned for residents of the city to allow their cattle to roam the streets unattended to.

He said the mere presence of the animals sometimes scare drivers to the point of losing focus whiles driving.

He therefore urged the city authorities to take action on the cattle owners by slapping them with heavy fines in order to deter them from these acts. Interestingly, the AMA bye-laws are very strict against animals that stray in the city, but the problem is their implementation.

Laws that abhor cattle rearing in residential areas have been overlooked, whiles those that even restrict the number of animals that one can rear in residential areas have also been rendered disused. Cattle owners in the city have, therefore, been allowed to take the law into their own hands and are doing whatever they please.

In areas where animals or cattle are allowed to be reared, especially at the outskirts of the city, motorists are given speed limit reduction and road signs showing areas where the animals cross are visibly displayed at vantage points.

Accra File would want to remind AMA to be up and doing, and to rigorously implement the city bye-laws, especially those regulating animal ownership and breeding.
