Bui Power Authority Assists \farmers

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) together with Sino Hydro, the Chinese construction company working on the Bui power project have donated relief items valued at Gh¢1,000 to 27 flood-affected farmers at Bui and Bator-Akanyakrom in the Tain district of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The farms were flooded following the diversion of the river to help the concrete works to cure faster. According to experts, the flooding occurred due to the proximity of the farms to the river.

At Bator-Akanyakrom, 10 acres of food crop farms which included yams, cocoyam, cassava and vegetable farms belonging to 21 farmers got flooded, while 21 acres of cashew and other food crop farms owned by four farmers at Bui were also flooded.

Presenting the items, Mr Anthony Boye Osafo-Kissi, Resident Engineer, said the BPA was committed to the mandate of ensuring that the interest of communities along the project site was protected at all times, pointing out that it was in the light of this that the BPA had responded quickly to relieve the pain of the affected families.

“BPA and Sino Hydro are aware of your difficulties since the beginning of the flood last week and the gesture is a show of its responsibility as well as an affirmation of the healthy relationship between the affected communities and the BPA”, he said.

Mr Osafo-Kissi said as part of immediate safety measures, both upstream and downstream structures created to divert the river had been opened to allow free flow of water.

“This does not affect the work done in any way. It is part of the construction plan to open the diversion at this time of the year and this will even help the concrete works to cure faster”, he added.

The Abusuapanin of Bui, Opanin Yaw Ofori, on behalf of the victims thanked BPA and Sino-Hydro for the assistance, which he said, was timely.

Nana Ofori called for the strengthening of ties between the affected communities, BPA and Sino hydro in order to make the resettlement of Bui, Akanyakrom-Bator and Dokakyina, which had been slated for next year a success.

In an interview with the Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Power Authority, Mr Jabesh Amissah-Arthur promised the affected communities that the BPA would do all it could to protect the lives and property of the affected communities.

Earlier, the Tain district assembly, led by its District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Jones Samuel Tawiah, presented 10 bags of rice to the flood victims in both communities.
