Atwima-Mponua District celebrates annual national health week

Kumasi, Sept. 29, GNA - Mrs Theresa Adomako-Tawiah, Atwima-Mponua District Chief Executive (DCE), said there was the need for the people to maintain high standards of environmental sanitation and observe good personal hygiene.

This, she said, was important to prevent the spread of diseases to enable the people to enjoy good health and increase their life expectancy.

Mrs Adomako-Tawiah was speaking at a durbar to climax the 30th Annual National Health Week celebration at Sreso-Timpom, a cocoa and food crop farming community under the theme; “Prevent Malaria, Save a Mother and Child.”

The DCE asked the people not to live in a filthy environment saying that the fight to roll back malaria could succeed only when conditions were created to make it difficult for mosquitoes to breed.

She said malaria is the leading cause of death in children under age five and among pregnant women in the country.

Mrs Belinda Baffoe Bonney, District Director of Health, advised the people to report early to the medical facilities for treatment when they fell sick.

She also advised pregnant women to sleep in treated mosquito bed-nets and avoid self-medication.
