  Wed, 30 Sep 2009

With the view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of belongingness, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed, has presented assorted food and drinks, running into thousands of Ghana cedis, to the School for the Blind at Akropong.

Presenting the items, the Imam, who is also the Ashanti Regional Director of Islamic Schools and a Board Member of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said the gesture forms party of this year's Eid il Fitr celebration, which also coincided with the 100th Birthday of the First President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

According to him, he sees it as a great joy, the fulfillment of Allah, and the words of the Holy Koran to support and help the poor and vulnerable in society.

The donation, he explained, has been an annual event to celebrate with people with disability in the country, where the School for the Blind is the main concern of interest.

According to Sheikh, when he was in the university, he had some lecturers who were blind, but motivated and impacted in him knowledge that is beyond the description of words.

For this, he disclosed, he had nothing more to offer than to also share what he has with people of the same fate, as his university lecturers.

Sheikh also emphasised on the fact that disability was not inability hence some of the students in the school who excel and show a great revelation of talents, were being helped to further their education to the highest degree.

He said, recently, one of the students who showed great academic enthusiasm, was now being sponsored by him to further her education at the University of Ghana, Legon, which he thinks was a great achievement for him and society.

He also stated categorically that it was God who had made him who he was, and what he had become, henceforth the appointment being given him would be a stepping stone to push this agenda of his to the next level, by providing them with more of the things they need.

Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzi, Assistant Headmaster and Acting Headmaster of the school, said he was very delighted with what Sheikh and his team had done for his school.

He said all that Sheikh was doing for the school, would surely yield fruits that will be appreciated by the blind folks.

He then appealed to the public to emulate what Sheikh Mohammed and his team had done for the school, for a better Ghana.
