Winneba (C/R), Aug 28, GNA - The Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Amenowode, has appealed to stakeholders in education to discuss educational matters devoid of partisan politics.
He said playing politics with education had the potential to retard the development of the nation.
Me Amenowode was speaking at the 14th National Biennial Congress of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Education , Winneba.
It was on the theme, "Education System in Ghana-which way" and was attended bymembers from the University of Education, Winneba, University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, University of Development Studies,University of Mines and Technology and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Mr. Amenowode called for a broad-based educational system to confront the challenges ahead.
The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Nana Opoku-Agyemang, said there was the need to see thetraditional system as an integral part of modern educational system.
She said some of the solutions to the educational system were inherent in the traditional system and called for a holistic approach to deal with problems in the system.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang called on government to create an enabling environmentrelevantto the nation's history and culture.
On the duration of the senior high school, she said it was not a matter of three or four years but rather how many students could get access to the senior high schools and also how students could receive quality tuition.
The incoming National President of UTAG, Prof Samuel Asiedu-Addo, said he would live up to expectation and urged members to unite to chart a common path for development.
He said UTAG would continue to be an inspiration to teachers and the teaching profession and therefore asked government to take a look at their salaries so they could give their best.
The out going National President of the association, Dr. Kwaku Ohene-Yenkyera, said UTAG was more qualified than any other body to contribute to then debate on the educational system.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof Mawutor Avoke who chaired the function, appealed to UTAG to continue to strive for excellence to put the association on a high pedestal.
