Wa, Aug. 15, GNA - Mr. Mahmud Khalid, Upper West Regional Minister, has expressed concern about the stalling of the region's development agenda as a result of protracted chieftaincy disputes.
He therefore tasked the Judicial Committee of the Regional House of Chiefs to work hard to see to the early disposal of cases brought before them.
He discounted the argument that the house have no legal counsels to deal with cases, adding: "Can't we… do something about it. It is important to say that we cannot fail to do the right thing."
Mr. Khalid was addressing members of the Regional House of Chiefs at its general meeting in Wa.
He said justice was about doing the right thing and damning the consequences.
"But today all that we see or hear in chieftaincy dispute is that only the rich are mostly favoured to be right. The poor is exploited and deny justice and the price of it is conflict in the communities," Mr. Khalid noted.
Mr. Khalid expressed regret about the protests, threats, litigations and violence that was often associated with the ascension of skins in the region.
"Even areas which hitherto had been known to be quite peaceful in transitions had now fallen prey to the dangerous canker of disputes."
He urged the chiefs to ensure the early disposal of all outstanding disputes to secure peace for the people to enhance development.
Mr. Khalid also appealed to them to help make the region a peaceful place to attract workers, investors and tourists and help to rekindle the self-help spirit among the people.
He cautioned the house against active partisan politics, as that could mar the reputation of the chieftaincy institution and erode its influence in society.
Chiefs should also avail themselves to lifelong learning opportunities like seminars, workshops and other courses to acquire knowledge and skills to partner government to develop the country.
Mr. Khalid asked the chiefs to adopt innovative ways of persuading the youth to practice their culture and avoid mimicking foreign values, some of which are detrimental to their health and well-being.
Naa Sohimininye Dana Gore ll, President of the Regional House of Chiefs, appealed to government to consider elevating Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies to a full-fledged university to cater for the educational needs of the youth.
He also appealed for a Regional Hospital to help provide quality health care delivery to the people and enhance productivity.
Naa Gore who is also the Paramount Chief of the Dorimon Traditional Area bemoaned the poor planning of the Wa township and the disregard for road and traffic regulations in the municipality.
