MTN launches $70k education project

By Edmond Gyebi, Tamale - Ghanaian Chronicle

Mobile Telecommunications Network Ghana (MTN-Ghana), as part of its corporate social responsibility, has launched a $70,000 educational project to support some selected basic schools in the Northern Region.

The project, which is jointly funded by MTN Ghana Foundation and the Centre for Education Development and Management (CEDEM), is under the theme, “Promoting Literacy and Numeracy in the Northern Region.”

The MTN Ghana Academy for Education Development is being piloted in five (5) basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis, out of a total of 25 schools selected for the project in the region.

The five selected schools include St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic, Tiyumba Primary and JHS, Vittin Ansuariya English and Arabic School, A.M.E Zion School and the Choggu Demonstration School, all based in Tamale.

The three-year running project is expected to benefit over 10,000 pupils in the five schools. The Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Ms. Mawuena Dumor, explained that the project would equip the beneficiary schools with the requisite resources and personnel, to help upgrade the standard of teaching, provide in-service training for teachers, and supply learning and teaching materials.

According to her, the MTN's decision to launch the AED project in Northern Region stems from its awareness of the region's untapped natural and human resources.

The Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina, commended MTN Ghana for the initiative, which he said would go a long way to reduce illiteracy, poverty and conflicts.

Mr. Nayina, however, entreated other corporate entities to emulate the example of MTN, to remove Northern Region from the bracket of the poorest region in Ghana.

Meanwhile, students in the Northern Region, and for that matter the Tamale Metropolis, perform very badly each year in the BECE and SSCE examinations, especially in English Language and Mathematics.
