The Kumasi Central Market has been shut down indefinitely following Thursday's fire outbreak which killed two children and destroyed several shops.

Although the Fire Service is yet to confirm the cause of the inferno, traders blame it on an electric fault.

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is expected to visit the scene later Friday to assess the extent of damage and sympathise with the traders.

This is the first time fire has gutted Kumasi's busiest market and city authorities have been faulted for failing to take measures to prevent the outbreak.

The fire is said to have started late afternoon Thursday running through shops and destroying property worth millions of Ghana cedis.

Many a resident in the Ashanti Regional capital, are by themselves with grief, as they recount the losses.

A trader shouted “I don't know what to do with myself,” as she looked at the smouldering embers of her shop.
