Wildlife experts attend confab

By Lawrence Akpalu-Dodowa - newtimesonline.com

Birdlife and Wildlife experts from 15 African countries have ended a three-day workshop at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, that discussed means of mainstreaming environmental conservation in educational systems on the continent.

Participants from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Rwanda, Seychelles, Ethiopia, Burundi, Tunisia, Zimbabwe and Ghana attended the workshop themed, 'Linking African children to the global conservation community – for benefits of nature and people'.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Education, Alex Tetteh-Enyo, called on civil society organisations to improve on their communication facilities to enable children in wildlife clubs throughout Africa share experiences with each other.

This, he said, would help arrest pitfalls in environmental conservation and education issues.

"We need to link the youths in the sub-region together so that they can better understand and appreciate the challenges of tomorrow," he added.

Mr.Tettey-Enyo said it was important to share information on environmental education so as to strengthen awareness towards building strong ecosystems.

It is in the light of these developments that the ministry would adopt policies and strategies to expand the activities and programmes of wildlife clubs in schools in the country to bring about effective communication among the various clubs.

He said environmental problems such as deforestation and species extinction span national boundaries, for this reason, solutions must be found towards international co-operation and support.

The minister said by integrating conservation and sustainable use of the environment into educational programmes, youth clubs would become the mouth-piece on their environment in their communities.

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, said that linking the clubs would help members to academically train their peers using the environmental framework.

He urged the participants to collectively apply an integrated approach to teaching and helping the youth understand the interrelated elements of sustainable environmental systems.
