Re-enacting Robin Hood

Ex-President Jerry Rawlings Imagine a respectable cultural function like the Akwasidae of the Ashantis turned upside down by a pistol-touting man from Rawlings' stable. What ensued was a bedlam and not an imaginary scenario from a fiction book.

That was the situation at the Asantehene's Palace in Kumasi when former President Jerry John Rawlings turned up at the cultural engagement in the Ashanti Regional capital.

We wish we did not have to write about the former president but then when the man misbehaves we would not be helping our readers if we do not bring up such developments for Ghanaians to consider.

Mr. Rawlings it appears is refusing to grow and it is appalling that we have had to make such an observation of a man who once presided over the affairs of this country.

Rawlings is intent on taking over Ghana and has not hidden his wish as evidenced from his recent remark that he regretted handing over power to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Recent developments focusing on Rawlings bring out the undeniable fact that the man seeks to indirectly rule this great country once more.

Otherwise why would he be all over the place passing unnecessary comments about the country's ruling class and how he intends managing affairs.

Vengeance and settlement of scores are two traits of Rawlings and we shudder to think that such a man is seeking an opportunity to have his National Democratic Congress (NDC) come back to power against this backdrop.

Announcing that he is back on the block when he turned up at a social engagement in Accra tells it all about what Rawlings seeks to have in Ghana.

The good people of Ghana must be viewing all these happenings so that they can advise themselves accordingly.

We are not unaware about plans by Rawlings and his boys to unleash a certain degree of unruliness during the run-off.

Such unruliness would be unfolded when for instance partisan elements are prevented from rigging through multiple voting as observed in some parts of the country earlier.

We did our best as a nation to obviate anarchy during the first round of election and are determined this time around to maintain the same momentum in ensuring that nothing untoward takes place.

One thing we have observed though is that the run-off would be unlike the first round because those who were cheated because they were wrongly made to believe everything was smooth-sailing, are now determined to ensure that the right things are done.

What Rawlings seeks to achieve by his Robin Hood style is to send fear down the spines of Ghanaians and then enable his boys to tamper with the results of the run-off.

We were saddened by what Rawlings suffered at the Akwasidae festival, being a former president. He was heckled, a conduct not befitting of a man who was once our president.

But must the people be faulted for the action they took against Rawlings?

In as much as he continues to stoop so low as to engage in unbecoming conducts, he would draw the disrespect of the people and more heckles.

We have for instance learnt that the man who wielded the pistol is yet to write a statement to the Police. We have also gathered that the former president who intervened and asked to be allowed to take care of the situation has not turned his man to the Police as was expected.

Is this the kind of person who should be preaching moralities in the country?

The security agencies have by Rawlings' conduct been forewarned and should therefore be forearmed, to contain the hounds of the former president should the need arise in the near future.
