A statutory fund is to be established to ensure regular payment of salaries of employees of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), Mr Kwesi Nkrumah, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, said on Thursday.
He was speaking at the Western Regional second anniversary celebration of the NYEP at Takoradi.
Mr Nkrumah said the statutory fund would make it possible to coordinate all funds for the programme.
He said the government is committed to the programme and would continue to give it the necessary support.
Mr Nkrumah said the programme is a development tool and affords employees the opportunity to progress along their chosen professions and to contribute towards national development.
He spoke against the public perception of the NYEP as a partisan programme.
Mr Nkrumah said the programme is available in all districts in the region and is open to all irrespective of political affiliation.
Mr Jojo Sam, Regional Coordinator of NYEP, said some 7,162 people have been employed under the programme in the region.
He said the programme is basically a paid internship that affords employees the opportunity to acquire skills relevant to their chosen fields.
