The Member of Parliament for Karaga in the Northern Region, Hon. Iddrisu Dauda is asking the security forces, particularly the Northern Regional Police Command, to investigate allegations of arms smuggling into the area.
His call follows a fresh incidence to what he said are a series of allegations of arms smuggling into the area that have not been investigated.
The MP told Joy News there are allegations that the presiding member of the Karaga District Assembly, Alhasan Shanni, recently smuggled a rifle into Karaga. He is said to have left the rifle in the bush near a school in the Sung electoral area in Karaga. When he could not find the rifle the next day, he accused the assembly member for the Sung electoral area, Mahama Mahama, of hiding the rifle and allegedly threatened his life.
The Assembly member who spoke to Joy News' correspondent, Mahama Shaibu in Tamale, therefore fled the area.
The presiding member has however denied any knowledge of the rifle and the alleged threat on Mahama.
He told Mahama Shaibu that he came into contact with the assembly member at a registration centre where he educated the people on the registration exercise. He also denied any scuffle with the assembly member.
The MP, however, says the allegation is a serious one and must be investigated.
