A 32-year old teacher, of the Ridge Experimental School in Sunyani, Philomena Awuah, was on Tuesday, August 4, found dead in a pool of blood, with multiple cuts on her neck, abdomen and thigh, in her bedroom at Area 4, a suburb of Sunyani. … to deliver quality jobs The Chairman of the Progressive Road Contractors Association (PROCA), in the Central Region, Mr. Hammond Larbi, has revealed that efforts are being made by government, to equip road contractors in the Central Region, to enable them survive in the modern day construction industry.
Speaking at the first general meeting of the PROCA, in Cape Coast on Tuesday, Larbi noted that most of the road contractors in the region, were out of business due to lack of equipment, and that following the death of the owner of Swedru Contractors, and K. E. and Sons, as well as K. B. Annan, the region had lost its top contractors.
He said in a bid to revive the inactive road contractors sector in the region, the Minister of Roads and Transport, Dr Richard Anane, made a trip with some selected contractors, from all the 10 regions to Europe, where they inspected bulldozers, excavators and tipper trucks.
Larbi, who was part of the team to Europe, said the government had contracted a Belgian company to ship 100 heavy-duty machines, to boost the image of contractors in Ghana.
He said one contractor from the region, would benefit from a set of five heavy machines, to assist him/her to meet modern day contract demands. The set is made up an excavator, a bulldozer, backhoe loader, wheel loader, grader and a tipper truck.
“I want to see contractors of the region equipped,” he said, urging all members of PROCA, to have confidence in the association.
Touching on the bidding process, Larbi advised road contractors to avoid pricing low for contracts, because such actions tended to frustrate them during price hikes, and impressed on them to visit sites before putting in their bids.
He said the PROCA was interested in protecting contractors, as well as government funding, so as to ensure efficiency and value for money.
“Contractors should not be afraid to collect interest on delayed payments, because most contractors are afraid being blacklisted, when they demand interest on delayed payments,” he added. Source: David Allan Paintsil Cape Coast - Ghanaian Chronicle
