Chief Inspector (Rtd) Alhaji Mahammud Alidu, who is also a member of the Research and Communication Committee of the Greater Accra Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a formal complaint to the Police against former President Jerry John Rawlings.
According to the retired police officer, Rawlings by his actions is contravening Sections of the 1960 Constitution.
He has also charged Rawlings to cease from accusing President John Agyekum Kufuor and the leadership of NPP for killing the late Ya Na of Dagbon, unless Rawlings can prove it.
Referring to a banner headline story on January 10, 2008 edition of The Daily Graphic with the caption, "JJ Attacks Akufo Addo" in which the former President attacked President Kufuor, the NPP Presidential candidate and the leadership of the party as "a bunch of thieves," he said Mr. Rawlings is always accusing the NPP administration of killing the late overlord of Dagbon, without offering assistance to Police in unravelling the criminal acts he alleges against his accusers.
Alhaji Mahamud Alidu said this act of Mr. Rawlings is in contravention of Section 234 and 235 of Act 29 of the 1960 Constitution.
In a document signed by Mahammud Alidu with the title "A Complaint of Compounding Crime Against Former President Jerry John Rawlings" addressed to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service and copied to the IGP, President Kufuor, Ministers of Defence and Interior and National Security among others, the retired Chief Inspector said since the unfortunate death of the overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Yakubu Andani II, Mr. Rawlings has constantly accused the government of masterminding his death.
"The reason is obvious: to win underserved political advantage in favour of the NDC party of which he is the Founder," he said.
He continued that Mr. Rawlings, as the longest serving Head of State of this country, ought to know that "when one has a piece of information in a criminal case, you immediately inform the security agencies."
He questioned: "In these entire allegations made by Rawlings, has he made any formal report to the police?"
Alhaji Mahammud Alidu noted that as a patriotic citizen of the country and a card bearing member of the NPP, he considered the politicisation of the death of the Ya Na as against the norms and traditional values of the country and had decided to "formally report the conduct of former President Rawlings to your outfit for action to be taken against him."
"Who is Rawlings to have the audacity to attack all State institutions, including the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police? He has held Ghanaians to ransom and treated the Presidency with impunity and contempt for far too long."
He added that it was about time the intransigence of the former President was put to a stop, accusing Mr Rawlings for executing seven military generals including three former Heads of State in his bloody so called June 4th revolution and turning around after nineteen years in office amassing wealth left and right.
Alhaji Mahammud further called on the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service to conduct investigation into his complaint to bring the former President to face the full rigours of the law.
According to him, Mr. Rawlings has no moral justification to pontificate to the people of this country.
