FOURTEEN PASSENGERS including a one year old baby girl on board a Mercedes Benz 207 bus, on Wednesday, sustained various degrees of injury when the bus with registration number GR 9953 F on which they were travelling got involved in an accident off the Tema Motorway.

The bus was travelling from Accra to Mepe in the Volta Region when the accident occurred.

When DAILY GUIDE got to the scene at about 2.30pm the injured had been taken to the Tema General Hospital while personnel of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) were directing traffic.

According to eyewitnesses the Benz bus, which was overloaded, was travelling at top speed when suddenly it burst its front tyre, veered off the road and somersaulted into a ditch.

When DAILY GUIDE got to the Tema General Hospital most of the victims had been attended to, including the one year old baby who had some bruises on her left arm, while nurses worked hard to save the life of one person who was in critical condition.

The Principal Nursing Officer in charge of the Accident and Emergency Centre of the hospital, Ms. Paula Baayel, told the paper that all 14 victims were being taken care of.

One of the victims, 20-year-old Dziwornu, however denied eyewitness account that the driver was driving at top speed.

He said he could not remember exactly how the accident occurred but indicated that the driver did his best to save the situation and that he lost control of the steering wheel.

Mr. Francis Anyinatoe, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ashaiman who was at the scene said on hearing of the accident he rushed there to assist.

He called on drivers and station masters to ensure that vehicles are not overloaded so as to avoid accidents.
