President John Agyekum Kufuor has cut the sod for work to begin on a 70-kilometer road project for the people of the northern part of the Volta Region.
The GH¢47.52 million road, which is the biggest road project to be single-handedly financed by the government, would serve as the main link road among Worawora, Asukawkaw, Tokroano, Nkwanta Junction and Dambai, which are the major food producing areas in the region.
The project, which is being executed by Messrs Shinsung Engineering and Construction Company Limited, involves the construction of a two-lane single carriage bituminous surfaced road to be completed in three and a half years.
Before cutting the sod, President Kufuor, addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people at Worawora, said the road when completed would serve as an important link between the southern and northern corridors of the Volta Region, and would promote the evacuation of goods and services between the two corridors, a situation which was hitherto impossible.
He announced that the European Union had made available funds for the reconstruction of a 52-kilometer road to link Dodi Pepesu and Nkwanta among other projects the government would be undertaking in the area.
He urged the contractors of the project to exercise professionalism in order to ensure the early completion of the project while adhering strictly to required road construction standards and specifications.
The Minister of Transport, Richard Annane, giving a breakdown of the project, said it is a section of the Regional Route 26 and forms part of the link from Ho to Kete Krachi.
Apart from enhancing the efficient administration of the region, the road would also serve as an alternative link between Volta and the three regions in the northern part of the country.
He pledged his Ministry's commitment to the speedy completion of the project, and appealed to motorists and residents to exercise maximum care and restraint since “construction projects such as this create inconvenience”.
Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister stressed that the Worawora- Dambai road was of strategic importance to the region, adding that government's effort to construct it was in recognition of the importance it attaches to the region.
Nana Mprah Besemuna, the Krachi Wura, who chaired the function, stated that reconstruction of the road was the result of an appeal made to government when the traditional authorities in the area called on the President in June last year.
He said government had made history in the area by taking the bold decision to invest such a huge sum of money into the provision of the road, which would invariably bring to an end the problem of post harvest loses and reduce the high cost of transport in the area.
He expressed the support of the traditional authority in the area to enable the constructors complete the project on schedule.
He later drew the attention of the President to the high incidence of river blindness in the area, and called for a quick intervention to save the situation.
