Despite efforts of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and Zoomlion, a waste and sanitation management company, to keep the city clean, pedestrians and hawkers especially, have chosen to dispose of litter on the streets, and in the gutters, although they have been provided with litter bins.
Going round the city, the Accra File noticed a new set of poly-bins, at vantage points, for the disposal of litter.
But strangely enough, those who reside near these litter bins have chosen to use them for the disposal of garbage from their homes, though these are meant for the use of passers-by.
Another appalling habit, which was also noticed, was that instead of depositing litter into these bins, people rather dump liquid and solid waste, ranging from faeces and residue of food.
In an interview with Maa Afua, a 16 year old girl, who was putting food residue into the litter bin, she said her mother asked her to do that because they would have to pay to dispose of it at the main rubbish/garbage dump.
At La Paz, the litter bin was full to the brim, but it was still being used by the pedestrians. At the lorry station it was an eyesore, with litter, ranging from the orange peels to plastic bags scattered all over the station.
The most disgusting thing, of it all, was that the rubbish dump was situated close to a chop bar, making it unhealthy to eat from such point, yet people were patronising the place.
In an interview with a pedestrian, he said he disposed of his litter on the streets, because he does not have anywhere to do that, and when it was pointed out to him that there was one at a point ahead, his answer was that he would not walk that far, just to dispose of a water sachet.
So who is to blame? Is it that the metropolitan laws are not being enforced, or is it the duty of the poor Ghanaian to keep our environment clean?
We are the ones who would suffer the consequences of our habits, so let us keep our environment clean, and to the AMA, and the other stakeholders in the business of waste disposal, let us make it a must to empty the bins on time, to allow those who want to dispose of litter properly to keep Ghana clean, the opportunity to do so.
