Two cable thieves jailed four years each

The Tema Circuit Court 'B' has sentenced two cable thieves to four years imprisonment each for stealing over 200 meters of Ghana Telecom (GT) area cables worth over GH¢7,000 from the Tema Heavy Industrial Area.
Karim Ibrahim, 25, and Daniel Sarpong, 23, residents of Ashaiman were convicted on their own plea of guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and stealing.
The court presided over by Mrs Amanda Aikains, sentenced the two to a four year jail term each for each count, the sentence were to run concurrently.
Chief Inspector Daniel Nortey, prosecuting, told the court that due to the frequent thefts of telephone cables in the industrial area, especially near Myroc Logistics Company Limited, GT officials on June 17, warned a witness in the case, who is a scrap dealer, not to deal in stolen cables.
On June 18, the witness, who was determined to exonerate his name, became suspicious and alerted his son when he saw the overhead area cables shaking at about 0430 hours when he woke up for prayers.
The court heard that Ibrahim and Sarpong, who were holding cutlasses struggled with the son of the witness in the mud when he attempted arresting them after he spotted them pulling and coiling the cables they have cut.
Prosecution stated that the two were however overpowered by the help of other residents and handed over to the Community One Police.
