Germany has lauded Ghana's peacekeeping role as its Deputy Ambassador in the country handed over a GH¢42, 000 Disaster Management Centre to the Ghana Armed Forces at the Engineering Training School at Teshie recently.
The Centre, which was built to complement the Engineer Training School, consists of two training blocks and one office block, which is yet to be completed.
“Ghana's performance as a lead nation in the West African region in political, economic and military respect is broadly recognised,” said the Deputy Head of Mission, Jana Orlowski.
“In particular, Ghana's commitment to peacekeeping missions is highly appreciated and respected all over the world. No other African country has ever contributed to so many missions since its independence.”
Mrs. Orlowski said that Ghana's role as a peacekeeper was evolving as challenges emerged, and “Germany appreciates that besides being part of the ECOWAS civil mission, Ghana is also an important pillar of the military component of the ECOWAS standby force.
“Nowadays, armed forces have to meet new challenges. Among these are relief efforts such as administrative aid in case of serious major accidents and – when looking back at last year's floods – particularly natural disasters.”
To that end, the centre will train military engineers in modern disaster management techniques, including masonry, concrete construction, plumbing, carpentry and electric work.
She said the expertise should help the armed forces support public services after natural disasters, as well as during peacekeeping and peace support missions, saying the facility was presented as an enduring symbol of Ghana and Germany's military co-operation.
“For effective disaster management, the Armed Forces need dedicated leadership and highly motivated and excellently trained soldiers, not only among military engineers, but also among other branches of the Armed Forces. Training is only one part of successful military disaster management, the other is adequate infrastructure.”
