Nine men are being held by the Police in the Northern Region for their alleged roles in the violent clashes in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo district last Sunday which cost two lives.

The District Police in Bunkpurugu arrested five of the suspects while their counterparts at Yunyoo arrested the other four, one of whom had in his possession a locally manufactured rifle.

An uneasy calm has since returned to the district following the arrival of a combined team of over 100 police and military personnel after fighting broke out at Yunyoo last Sunday over a disputed farm land. The fighting also led to the burning of some houses.

On Wednesday, about six villages and the police station at Yunyoo were razed while many people fled the area to seek refuge in nearby communities.

Inspector Albert Johnson, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, told Joy News that those arrested are in custody and that the area was calm.
