
PRESIDENT JOHN Agyekum Kufuor has set up a Ministerial Committee on Oil and Gas development in the country.
The Ministerial Committee is to be supported by a Technical Committee at the Office of the President.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation signed by the sector Minister, Mrs. Oboshie Sai-Cofie, the Ministerial Committee would be overseen by the Chief Advisor to the President and includes the Ministers of Energy; Defence; Finance and Economic Planning; Justice and Attorney General; Local Government, Rural Development and Environment; Information and National Orientation, and Foreign Affairs.
The Technical Committee would also be under the Office of the President with representation from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning; the Attorney General's Department; Ministry of Defence (Ghana Navy); Ministry of Energy; Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Under the initiative of the President, therefore, a National Oil and Gas Forum would be held in Accra from today February 25 to 29.
The forum would deliberate on a scheme to ensure the best for the country in terms of rules of exploratory rights, allocation of blocks and equitable distribution of oil revenues.
The forum would also consider key issues including Contract Negotiations for Fair Share of Revenues; Effective Resource and Revenue Management; Local Content and Infrastructure Issues; Environmental Management and Security; the Protection of National Interest as well as other issues relating to the sector.
It is envisaged that the discussions would lead to the development of an appropriate and effective Sector Policy and Industry Master Plan.
It is expected also that the forum would seek views from various sections of society for inclusion in the development of the sector policy.
The Technical Committee would continue to receive papers and suggestions from interested stakeholders for review and assessment after the event.
Currently, the Technical Committee has been working with development partners such as Norway (Lead Development Partner); the World Bank; GTZ; USAID; AfDB; the Commonwealth Secretariat and DFID.
