The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, yesterday cut a sod for the construction of the Kwame Nkrumah Africa Labour College(KNALC) in Accra.
The College, when completed would train present and future African Trade Union Leaders to help contribute to the evolution of a strong, united, democratic, economically- integrated and prosperous Africa.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice- President said Ghana feels honored by the siting of the Headquarters of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) in Accra 'The Government of Ghana has also graciously provided OATUU with a Secretariat, an official residence for the OATUU Secretary- General as well as land for the KNALC,' he noted.
Aliu Mahama believes that the College will turn out products that would not only strengthen the intellectual capacity of African Trade Union leaders but would also make them appreciate the intricate issues of governance in developing economies.
The Vice-President assured OATUU that Government would continue to give diplomatic, financial and moral support to the OATUU in order to keep the spirit of the labour movement in Ghana and Africa perpetually aflame.
The Project, which will start with the construction of the students' dormitory block is the joint efforts of the government of the People's Republic of China, the OATUU and the All China Federation of Trade Unions as well as all the relevant departments.
The Ambassador of China to Ghana, H. E. Yu Wenzhe, explained that the students' dormitory block, when completed, will have a floor space of 5205 square meters with the total land area of 12,300 square meters. The facility will be furnished by the Government of China. The Project is established to cost 5 million United States Dollars.
'It will be a complex of accommodation for students of the OATUU college and serve as another symbol of Sino-African friendship and co-operation.,' he said.
The college is named after the founder of modern Ghana, the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
