E/R: Police investigate drowning of a 9-year-old in a swimming pool in Koforidua

The police in Koforidua have commenced investigations into the heartbreaking death of Yaa Serwaa, a nine-year-old pupil of Trinity Presbyterian Basic School, who drowned in a swimming pool at Tonyx Hotel on Sunday.

Yaa Serwaa had visited the pool with her father and five siblings for what was expected to be a fun outing.

Reports indicate that she did not enter the pool initially but stayed by the poolside, taking pictures while her siblings and other children swam. Tragically, she was later discovered unresponsive in the water.

She was immediately retrieved and rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A family member, speaking to Starr FM, recounted the events as described by the child’s mother:

“The child didn’t swim. She sat near the pool to take pictures. She went with her father, but later, the father started searching for her all over. Then someone alerted him that the child was under the pool. She was removed and rushed to the Central Hospital but died on arrival," he said.

The family member also noted that Yaa Serwaa had been at the pool with her five siblings, including a four-year-old, and that several others were swimming when the incident occurred.

The police are now working to determine the circumstances surrounding the drowning, focusing on potential lapses in supervision or safety measures at the hotel.

Meanwhile, the management of Tonyx Hotel in a statement has expressed their profound regret over the incident and pledged their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
