The organisers of this year's Paris Olympics are aiming to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Games. Hydrogen fuel is one of the elements in this endeavour.

The French company Air Liquide will be supplying renewable hydrogen to the Paris 2024's official transport fleet which will include five hundred hydrogen cars.

According to Pierre Cunéo, director of transport for Paris 2024, the five hundred cars running on green hydrogen will be used to move in and around the Paris area during the Olympics.

"But, those vehicles will also have a legacy along with the hydrogen refuelling stations. [After the Games] these vehicles will be reinjected into the fleet of hydrogen taxis that will serve the Paris area," he said.

Erwin Perfornis of Air Liquide, for his part, said events like the Olympics are especially important as they function as catalysts to support the development of energy transition.

"In the case of Paris, this has enabled us to double the number of (hydrogen refuelling) stations and to triple the size of the fleet. This will continue afterwards," he said.
