‘You passed through the back door but congratulations’ — Atubiga on Prof Jane Naana’s NDC running mate selection

Former NDC member Stephen Atubiga has criticized the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) selection of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as their 2024 presidential running mate.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 18, Atubiga congratulated Professor Opoku-Agyemang on her nomination but expressed doubts about her suitability.

Atubiga said "despite she coming through the back door as JJ said in 2020 when she was being introduced to him by JDM as his choice of veep Candidate."

While praising her credentials, Atubiga said "some of us just find her not cut for the veep slot at the moment due to lots of factors around the party structure, the Candidate himself [and] internal party predicaments."

He claimed her nomination has exacerbated existing cracks within NDC factions.

“The drama and circumstances of how she was handed over as a (political gunpoint power brokerage/ sharing deal) has deepened the power blocks cracks more in the NDC,” read part of the post.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party will hold a ceremony next week to officially present Professor Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its running mate for the 2024 general elections.

According to a press statement issued by the party's National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the event is scheduled to take place on April 24 at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

The ceremony will be graced by NDC flagbearer and former president John Dramani Mahama as well as other top party executives.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang is expected to address Ghanaians on the NDC's vision under Mr Mahama's leadership as well as the party's policies.
