Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has called for Ghana's performance tracking platform to have a longer term scope beyond election periods.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 16, Mr. Asare commented on the Performance Tracker launched by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, April 10.

The platform allows Ghanaians to monitor progress on infrastructural projects via photos, videos and data on a website.

The education advocate commended the aim of boosting transparency but argued oversight of government should not be tied only to election periods.

“The idea behind Performance Tracker is great. It shouldn't be limited to election years. Governance is not all about the next elections,” he wrote.

Mr. Asare further advocated for disclosure of project expenditures to give the public full visibility.

“It must be annual, with cost of projects added. Data credibility must also improve,” he said.

The Performance Tracker was first launched in 2020 ahead of the general elections that year.

This, according to many, makes the tracker a campaign tool instead of an initiative aimed at boosting transparency and accountability.
