Graduate nurses and midwives in Ghana who have completed their training but have been unable to find employment will take to the streets on Tuesday, April 16, in a peaceful protest to draw attention to their plight.

According to a press release issued by the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, thousands of healthcare graduates have been unemployed for 3-4 years after obtaining their degrees and certifications.

"Graduate Nurses and Midwives are tired of waiting for employment opportunities after 3-4 years of staying home. We believe it's time for action," said the association's statement.

"We deserve the opportunity to serve our communities and Ghana at large as our motherland to fulfill our passion for healthcare," the statement added.

The group will march from the Ridge bus terminal in Accra to the Ministry of Health, Parliament House, and Ministry of Finance to "make their voices heard" and present their situation to the relevant authorities.

The association stressed that the protest would be peaceful in nature and called on participants to adhere to principles of non-violence and respect local laws.

Meanwhile, the youth wing of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed solidarity with the nurses, noting that it is understandable for them to be at home while the sector remains understaffed.
