Dr. Bawumia on a promising spree again to deceive Ghanaians in 2024

Feature Article Dr. Bawumia on a promising spree again to deceive Ghanaians in 2024
MAR 28, 2024 LISTEN

It appears to me Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has completely forgotten that he and his NPP Party are currently in government but not in opposition anymore. It is apparently clear that Dr. Bawumia believes that to replace his boss, Nana Akufo-Addo, he needs to be on a promising spree again as he and Akufo-Addo did in 2016. This, in my view, is not a realistic self-belief.

As the Vice President of the nation for the past 8 years, what can Dr. Bawumia concretely say to confirm that he has turned Ghana’s economy around? I am afraid the prevailing macro-economic indicators such as the exchange rate, inflation rate, interbank policy rate, national debt, etc. have worsened under this current Vice President as the Chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT).

Dr. Bawumia in opposition then heavily chastised former President Mahama for bad economic management. He also in the early days of this current administration said that the escalating exchange rate between dollar and the cedi was tamed in a cage and securely locked and the key given to the IGP then. Dr. Bawumia also claimed that Ghana did not need to borrow to construct more motorable roads. All that Dr. Bawumia talked about never materialized, which seriously dented his credibility and sincerity in the eyes of Ghanaians.

Instead of Dr. Bawumia focusing on how to better manage the economy within the very few months left for this Akufo-Addo-led regime to go, he is busy promising tax amnesty, abolishment of e-levy, emissions tax, reduction of ministers, non-payment of external debt, etc. of which he is centrally part. All these suggestions made by Dr. Bawumia can be easily done now under this current governing NPP regime.

Is it not shocking and at best politically unwise that Dr. Bawumia wants Ghanaian Voters to take him and the NPP Party seriously when this insensitive Akufo-Addo-led government painfully implemented the draconian Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP), passed the e-levy, increased taxes, etc., leading to very difficult economic conditions now?

The political credibility and sincerity of the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia is badly damaged by his own inconsistent utterances and actions during opposition in 2016 and in government now. For instance, what the Vice President criticized the Mahama-led regime for and promised to do differently never happened or faithfully carried out.

The least Dr. Bawumia should be doing now is to be candid and be remorseful towards Ghanaians. It is irritating to many Ghanaians who think that Dr. Bawumia and the NPP Party are taking them for granted, which is rightly so.

The obvious question to ask is, if Dr. Bawumia knows what to do now to make the economy work, why is he promising again instead of tackling the ills of his NPP government now?

All odds are against Dr. Bawumia’s Presidential ambition and no promising spree again will work for him and the NPP Party in the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024.

Former President Mahama and the NDC Party are the obvious choice for Ghana in these crucially vital Presidential and Parliamentary elections coming up soon.
