Akumaa On February 13 the National Theater will be the venue for two performances of the evocatively titled stage play “Romantic Nonsense”. Written and directed by Nii Commey, this high voltage, fast paced comedy is based on the inherent pitfalls of marrying prematurely.
The play irreverently explores the outcome of youthful exuberance and innate human desires for proceeding quickly into marriage as opposed to upholding the religious and time-honored traditions of courtship and true knowledge and understanding between the intended partners.
In an interview with Alero Amoye she said the play is about two couples who seem not to agree.
She said, “The consummate introvert, Mr. Katawodeeso, realizes that he's married to the most sophisticated happy-go-lucky woman in the world, who takes delight in keeping up appearances.
“The sophisticated Diamond spends the better part of the day pointing accusing fingers and nagging because the man she married is nothing like her, too frugal and too reserved for her liking.
The two don't seem to be getting along. How do they mend the patches? Does Mr. Katawodeeso continue to be in a marriage he describes as "Romantic Nonsense" or does he quit?
“What about Mrs. Katawodeeso? Does she go back to her sweet maiden name "Sparks", or stay under the same roof with the man she calls "domestic boxer"?
Ironically, whoever comes to the house admires them for their compatibility. Their family pastor never ceases to use them as testimony of God's reward for faithfulness.
Romantic Nonsense is a hilarious drama that offers an account of the challenges new couples, who don't take the opportunity to court, may face. It has a thematic concern of creating awareness in the youth to court, using that time to learn about each other's idiosyncrasies before marriage; focusing not only on beauty, wealth, and fame, but also on character and chemistry.
“While one would not ordinarily associate a management consulting firm with being Executive Producers of a stage comedy, for Heritage Management Consulting (HMC) it was natural when TLG Concepts (TLGC) approached us on the subject.”
Working side by side with TLGC, the blossoming writer and director, Nii Comey and his passionate team of actors have provided one of those mentorship and association opportunities for HMC.
On the eve of Valentine you are invited to join in supporting this production and its performing artistes by coming out and laughing at the commonalities you find in your own relationship or rejoice in the fact that yours is not mirrored on stage.
To date, over 15 well-respected local companies (inclusive of this paper) have come together in sponsorship to provide a world-class evening of theatre.
If you are lucky enough to have a date or your spouse with you, there are opportunities to take a picture to commemorate the event, buy him or her rose, chocolates or some other refreshment, all while enjoying the cool sounds of Jazz in the theatre lobby. Come see “Romantic Nonsense” in one of only two showings at the National Theatre.
