KONKONSA-BA wants to know…..

TOO MANY RADIO SCHOOLS

The advent of radio broadcasting in the country has improved tremendously for the past 13years or so creating job opportunities for the youth and also helping in the country’s socio-economic development whiles promoting the democratization or political dispensation.

Due to this development many radio schools started springing up with the aim of training some of the youth who are interested in taking appointments with some of these radio stations. But the multi billion question is, are these schools living up to expectation and delivering? Who qualify to open a radio school? What courses and syllabus are they using? Who accredited them and what type of Certificate are they offering? Or is it the usual Console Disc Jockeying and that is all? These are few questions which need to be answered by whom anyway?

The phenomenon these days is for anybody to operate or open radio schools for unsuspected students most of whom didn’t do well in their SSS examination or wanted to become “radio presenters” by all means fall prey to some of these “mushroom schools” to cheat on them. Now the issue is who is responsible or let me put it this way; which sector ministry is responsible for the establishment of these schools? Is it the responsibility of the National Media Commission or National Communication Authority or under the auspices of Ministry of Education? Which is which?

I am not trying to look down on some of these schools because some of them are doing well with first “class” experience broadcasters and lecturers but at what percentage? Some of these schools are just interested in short-termism hence low profile lecturers. Yet role playing is as important as anything that we can dwell on for our future but if we should be living with mediocrity, then sooner or later we are going to be bombarded with presenters.

These schools have taken it upon themselves to teach courses like “cinematology” among others which takes about three years and reduce it to three or four month courses. I will advise that they should embark on training those who have completed their courses and are already in the field and that will help to add more knowledge to what they have already acquired. What should we do to reduce these “mushroom schools”? Should we ask the authorities to close them down or what do you think?

DID KWAW KESSE GOOF?

The third world reggae super star once said everyone has the right to decide his or her destiny but in the judgment day no partiality. A forthright ago the 20th ACRAG Awards took place at the prestigious National theatre where our distinguished artists were honored in their various endeavors or vocations. One of such recipient was Emmanuel Botwe alias Kwaw Kesse, Abodam

He was given a wooden stool as recognition for promoting music and all that. A few days later the multiple Ghana Music Awards winner was seen on T.V complaining bitterly about the award. “After all this effort I put in the music industry, and hitting my hands on my head look at what they have given me, unpolished and rough wooden stool with cracks and even without any inscription to show what this award is for me. What am I going to do with it and look at somebody like madam Ama Atta Aidoo who have done a lot and if you are rewarding her, see what you have given her?” He then left it at the T.V stations’ premises.

Konkonsa ba wants to know whether Kwaw Kesse did the right thing or did he speak for hiplifers or artists in general because some of them are hypocrites or sycophants who don’t have the guts or courage to say it as it is or are they suffering from lack of “artifacts”. We went to town to seek the views of some of the artists who were in total support of what Kwaw did to the extent that some of them think that he should have smashed it.

This is because artists have been taken for granted for far too long in this country. “if they are not ready for the events no one is forcing them to do that” claim one hip life artist who want to remain anonymous and another added that “if all artists become one and tell promoters who always pay peanut to us are given the same raw deal there will be sanity in the music industry we deserve better.”

Another school of thought had it that, Kwaw should have exercise restrain by taking it as one of those things and keep it than what he did. This is because awards are just for recognition but not for monetary gains. As well whatever the case may be this is his personal way of doing things, he does things the way he sees it not minding the criticism.
Well folks, whether Abodam did the right thing or not it is a wake up call to the organizers and other event organizers not to take our artists for granted because for the stone the builder rejects shall become the corner stone. But Kwaw koraa you say you don’t want award why you go for this one?

Konkonsa ba wants to know the criteria that were used in choosing the awardees because it is very disheartening that people like Ohemaa Mercy be awarded whiles gospel diva like Dinah Asamoah, Esther Smith, among others wait in awe.

What about Okala? He is a pioneer in the business with a lot of awards to his credit that he is not recognized in his own country? Is it a matter of selective justice I don’t know oo am just asking.

Eh so this year too the man whose ambiguity has led to the birth of the genre, hip life, which have taken a lot of our youth from the streets who could have been arm robbers, rapists, gamblers, was not honored. So why Reggie Rocktone the god father of hip life should be ignored just like that. Reggie deserves a national recognition and award period. The ambivalent among the connonsueir is that type which if allowed can be explosive may be the organizers know better…

….WELCOME EKOW PUNCHO
Does the name somehow ring a bell in your ears? Yes, your guess is as good as mine. This is one gentleman whose presence in the capital a few years back from Kumasi to Happy Fm in Accra put fears into some of our presenters because of his prowess in the industry. After a short stay the darling boy left for Kumasi again this time to Solid Fm and he is back again after his usual try and error to his former base-HAPPY FM as evening Drive presenter.  Continued
