Dedeba: The New Girl On The Block!

I first heard her on a refix of E-40’s 'Choices'. That song had so many versions, but it was really refreshing to hear a female jump on it. Dedeba is truly a talented lyricist. Her flawless delivery and impeccable timing make her stand out from all the rest of the rappers out there, both female and male. Although she is new to the game, and obviously has a long way to go, Dedeba is the artiste to look out for. She definitely has what it takes to take her to the top of the hip-hop food chain. Let’s get familiar.

How did you begin your career as a recording artiste?

Dedeba: It all began with radio interviews when I used to go every Friday after school at Kantinka FM. I would go there and bust freestyles. I’ve always had a deep passion for rap music. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I joined a group called GOJIT, who recorded me for the first time, and it was great. I loved being in the studio. It just felt so natural. One day after school, Vodafone Icons came for auditioning in Agona Swedru, where I lived.  I took part, but unfortunately, I couldn’t make it because I was underage. So, I decided I would give music a shot, and see where it can take me.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Dedeba:  I get my inspiration from my personal experiences and dreams. I may be young, but I’ve already been through a lot. I put that in my music. Also, I’m always looking at stuff that goes on around me. Our society is full of never-ending drama. It all serves as very good content for my music. There will always be something to talk about. Adding to all that, I’m heavily inspired by the music legends I’m constantly listening to.

How would you describe the type of music you do?

Dedeba:  I do rap music with highlife, hiplife and hip hop rhythms. Basically, I’ve chosen the local dialect Twi for my music. This is to favour the aged and youth, literates and illiterates. I believe in making music for everyone to listen to. As an artiste, it’s important to be as versatile as possible. You have to keep up with trends, and still be able to set new trends as well. I hope to carve a niche for myself and be considered the best at what I do. I’m constantly researching and looking at new ways to improve and evolve my music. A true artiste is constantly learning. It’s not just about having the talent, there is much more to being a great artiste than just talent.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced?

Dedeba:  Being a creative person is a challenge itself. There might be specific ways I want my music to sound, and finding the right producer could be sometimes tedious. However, education has been another challenge. Moreover, there were times I had to supply bread to get money for studio recording. If you don’t have enough financial backing, being an upcoming artiste is very difficult. Beats and studio time are expensive. I’ve had to do a lot of odd jobs to pay for that. Also, if you don’t have proper management to guide your career, success might take a long time. However, every challenge to me is just an obstacle in my way to greatness. I will not let a challenge deter me from reaching my goals.

As a student, how difficult is it to combine your career with your studies?

Dedeba: It was really tough to combine music and academics, especially in the secondary level while I was the entertainment prefect. But, time management has been a good influence. It makes the two easy to combine. You just need to plan your life and schedule properly, and stick to the plan.  I hope it continues when I enter university next year.

What does the future hold for you?
Dedeba:  I believe in the near future, I would make it to the international level. That is what most artistes dream of, and I’m working extremely hard to achieve that. I hope to become an internationally recognised star in the future. It will happen if I just stay focused and work hard. That’s like a proven scientific formula for success. The music industry is about non-stop grinding. The hustle never stops. You need to be the best you can be. It’s more about discipline that people think.

What are you working on at the moment?
Dedeba:  My management team is promoting my new single 'Kotosa'. I’m constantly in the studio working, trying to get the right sound. I will also be shooting my debut video soon. There are a few shows lined up, and I can’t wait to get on stage to perform, and show the world what I can do. There is a lot of strategic planning going on in my team now.

What advice would you give to upcoming artists reading this?

Dedeba:  Never give up. Many obstacles will come your way, but ignore them, be determined and stay focused. Let heavens be your limit and you’ll be there. There is no telling how far you can go so don’t limit yourself. Also, try to be as original as you can be. Don’t copy blindly. Originality will make you stand out from the rest and be noticed.
