MUSIC STAR Emmanuel Botchwey, known in music circles as 'Kwaw Kesse' or 'Abodam', has been apprehended by the police in Kumasi for smoking Indian hemp, also called 'wee', in public.

He has consequently been charged for using narcotics by the police and is expected to be arraigned before court in Kumasi on Monday morning, police have said.

ARREST

The musician was surrounded by his four friends in front of Plus 2 Drinking Pub Wine Shop in Kumasi as he confidently smoked the banned substance.

Uniformed policemen on snap check duties close to the area were informed about Kwaw Kesse's offence and they quickly rushed there to arrest him.

ASP Charles Appiah of the Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit said the incident happened on Saturday around 11pm when several people were partying at the Plus 2 Drinking Pub.

MISSION IN K'SI
Abodam was said to have visited Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, to take part in the famous Old School Reunion programme at the Baba Yara Stadium on Saturday.

After the programme he proceeded to the Plus 2 Wine Shop, a popular hangout spot in the city, where he decided to smoke the wee in public, leading to his arrest.

BAD SCENT
Scores of people who were seated about 20 meters away from where the musician was enjoying the illegal substance complained about his conduct, the paper learnt.

At a point, some people in the crowd could no longer stand the offensive smell emanating from the illegal substance and alerted the police.

ASP Appiah revealed that Abodam was the only one smoking the wee when the policemen arrived at the scene.

BEG
He said the top musician did not resist arrest when the policemen confronted him about smoking the illegal substance.

According to him, the other four people present, believed to be close associates of the musician, pleaded for leniency on behalf of Abodam.

ASP Appiah said the police parried away all appeals to let the musician go scot free and went ahead to arrest him to face the law.

The police capo said the illegal substance was retrieved from Abodam at the scene of his arrest by the law enforcement agents.

He noted that Abodam was then placed in police cells, adding that he will be hauled to court for the charge of using narcotics, possibly on Monday.
