Princess Diana and Prince Charles. INSET: The Cake

A slice of the wedding cake from the 1981 royal wedding between Prince Charles and Princess Diana has been sold at a Los Angeles auction for $1,375.

The 33-year-old cake, which is still preserved in its original white and silver presentation box, was sold online by Nate D. Sanders Auctions, an online auction company.

With the box was a card stating, “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince & Princess of Wales.”

Auction house spokesman, Sam Heller, says the buyer is a private collector, but there is a dedicated group of royal cake collectors who have also purchased cakes dating as far back to Queen Victoria's reign.

Although the cake came wrapped in its original wax paper, Mr Heller said it wouldn't be a good idea to try to eat it.
