Mama Zimbi Hosts Pre-University Fiesta
20.08.2014 LISTEN

To celebrate the International Youth Day, the cultural icon, multiple international award-winner and Executive Director of Mama Z

imbi Foundation (MZF), Akumaa Mama Zimbi, known privately as Mrs Joyce Akumaa Dongotey-Padi, under the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) project of the Mama Zimbi Foundation (MZF) has initiated yet another important event dubbed 'Pre-University Fiesta 2014'.

This annual event targets and addresses the future options and emotional challenges for socio-cultural and healthy development of thousands of teenage students yet to enter into the tertiary institution.

This year's 'Pre-University Fiesta 2014' event, where hundreds of students massively attended, was organised by MZF at the National Theatre in collaboration with Multi TV, Adom FM, Hitz FM and National Theatre.

Supporters included Rina's Restaurant at Osu Mall, IceCool Purified Water, Kalyppo, Frutelle, Gewah Pre-University and Nursing College, Mobile Engeneering Services and Media Fanbern. Speakers included Nana Yaw Osei, Rev Michael Banson, Candy Man and Mama Zimbi herself.

The students were taken through discussions such as entrepreneurship and ethics, positive use of the social media, and choices and expectations at the tertiary level. There were also a lot of performances and surprises made by the students.

According to Mama Zimbi, with the current state of our Ghana's educational system, over 60 percent of fresh senior high school graduates do not get access to tertiary education.

A greater number of this percentage is, therefore, forced by circumstances or by their guardians to learn a vocation by becoming apprentices which they may not be interested in.

She added that most of these students, especially the girls who normally become very vulnerable during this period of their lives could become victims to all forms of abuse and violence, and these calls for desperate measures to save this sector of our population.
